W.D. Cordell had a cousin named Tom Davidson who was in the Navy at the
beginning of World War 2. He served aboard the USS
HOUSTON, a heavy cruiser that was sunk in mid-February of 1942. My aunt
Frances remembers:
I remember when momma got the letter out mailbox, I think from Aunt Gladys, that Tom was missing, I remember the mailbox, seems like she was crying when she came back across the road reading a letter I guess. Anyway she had paper in her hand. I think that was the same place we live (way out in the country) when Glen and I watched the sheet of rain coming, rained right up to our place, it was like a curtain. Coyotes got one of Glen's dogs there. Boy that was a long time ago. Visit the Dictionary of American Naval Fighting Ships page on the Houston at Http://www.hazegray.org/danfs/cruisers/cl30.txt . The Naval Historical Center also has images at http://www.history.navy.mil/photos/sh-usn/usnsh-h/ca30.htm. This is one of the images:
