Bud Bale - "I was assigned to the pre-commissioning detail at General Engineering and Dry Dock Co. in March of 1944. When I arrived at Alamed from New York it was just a hull and I promptly received a 30-day leave back to New York. The photo of the crew was taken the day we were commissioned - January 10, 1944. I remember it well. Mrs. Duncanfield couldn't break the bottle of Champaign, and finally a Bos'n did it. I was officiating a football game at Harvard many years ago and thought I saw Captain Abbot. I regret to this day that I failed to stop and ask if it was him." |
