Wilbert Berry-

"When the food was bad in the mess hall I would cook in the engine room and the crew said I cooked like mother. The Engineering Officer always came down to the Engine Room for a handout. My ER was the forward one and the cooking odors would go up to the bridge if we were moving slowly, and Mr. Grey and Mr. Hubbard (two young Ensigns) would call down and ask what we were cooking and would we trade something for it. I always knew they would call if we all had the 8 to 12 or mid watch."

"When supplies came aboard they had to pass my engine room and I always made sure I stood outside the hatch and intercepted anything that didn't need refrigeration. We had a good stock of canned goods under our deck plates. One day Capt. Abbot held an inspection and lifted a deck plate over our hoard and just shook his head and made a comment to Handley (the Yeoman) but he never put it in his report. We always had cocoa in our engine room and sardine sandwiches with the little tiny HOT peppers that Eseralda (I think my spelling is right - and Electrician third class from Texas) used to get sent to us.
